今天咱們看一個很容易錯的詞，叫 whereas.

In this day and age, young people play a dominant role in the social, economic and cultural arenas, whereas the elderly are often marginalized.
在當代，年輕人在社會的，經濟的和文化的領域處在主導地位，而老年人則經常被忽視。
這句話用在７月８號的考題開頭段是不是很爽啊？

Some people argue that resolution of the housing problem hinges upon governmental endeavor, whereas many others contend that it calls for a concerted effort from individual, communal, corporate and governmental forces.
一些人認為解決住房問題取決于政府的努力，而其他很多人認為這需要來自于個人，社區，公司和政府的協調一致的努力。
這句話如果能用在5/13號大作文的開頭段，絕對拿分
關鍵是一個whereas，明確的表達出some people 和 many others這兩類人的鮮明對比，用一個詞連接起兩個簡單句，形成了一個超級復雜的句子。
再舉一個例子：

The government, more often than not, has to balance and weigh competing interests, whereas private resources invariably have a clear-cut,intensely-focused and well-scheduled objective in sponsoring national sports teams.
政府通常必須平衡很多相互競爭的利益，而個人或者公司的資源在資助國家代表隊的時候總是有明確，集中并且計劃清晰的目標。
這句話把4/29號誰應該贊助國家體育代表隊說得挺清除的吧？
所以，請各位看官記住，whereas是表達一句話當中從句和主句的主語之間對比的有力武器，開頭段和主體段都可以用（結尾段最好用別的句型）。
需要提醒的是whereas絕對不等于however,以前見到同學有用錯的
最后，whereas在國外的合同里一般表示“鑒于“的意思，不過這已經超出了雅思的范圍，出國之后大家再學吧 ：）
